Barnard Castle Trip
Flatts Road, DL12 8PR, Scar Top
Join DUArchSoc to explore the historic sights of Barnard Castle on Saturday 17 October!
- Visit the town's namesake, Barnard Castle, a stone fortress built in the 12th century, and later owned by Richard III.
Depending on weather, we will either:
- Follow the River Tees and walk approx. 40 minutes to the ruins of Egglestone Abbey, founded for Premonstratesian canons between 1195 and 1198.
Or:
- Shelter in the nearby Bowes Museum to tour its collections of art, fashion and design, including the famous Silver Swan automaton.
You will need to purchase your own tickets, for both transportation and Barnard Castle.*
Entry to Barnard Castle with a valid student ID costs £8.50 when booked online in advance or £10 on the day. Egglestone Abbey is free for everyone and Bowes Museum offers free entry with a valid student ID.
We will be taking the following trains:
- 8:39 LNER train from Durham to Darlington
- 17:02 LNER train from Darlington to Durham
The rest of the journey will be made via bus (probably the X75 or X76).
What you will need:
- weather appropriate clothes
- comfortable footwear
- packed lunch + water (no cafe available at the castle or abbey)
- valid student ID
* While we would usually offer subsidisation to members, we cannot currently access our finances due to ongoing SU website updates. We hope that this will be rectified soon.
